Thrillingly sung and danced, they are captivatingly staged by the director and choreographers on Timothy Clow's set of high graffiti-tagged walls and a pair of pipe-scaffold towers, with the center of the stage spinning to keep the action moving and the scene changes essentially nonexistent. The individual stories include the romance of a young couple, played by Ariana Papaleo in a star-making turn and by Devin Cortez, even better than he was as one of the best parts of "Damn Yankees" in the park last summer the changing futures of the three businesses and the effect on the community of two major events – a blackout and a financial windfall.īut Papaleo and Cortez's utterly winning couple (and their duets) aside, the real rewards of "In the Heights" come from the fluid ensemble numbers. Set over three days around the Fourth of July in 2008 in the Washington Heights neighborhood of northern Manhattan, "In the Heights" tells the story of a community centered around three businesses – bodega, hair salon and car service – and the abuela, or grandmother, watching over a large brood who are family even if they're not all blood relatives.
